ABOUT THE TEAM
One of the main reasons this website exists is that I am fortunate enough to live ten minutes away from the British Library where I have access to the huge archive of medical research.
I am a wheelchair user and medically retired. I have trained as both a singer and a psychotherapist but no longer pursue these occupations.
At the age of twenty in 1985, I was diagnosed with MS, although I have always questioned this diagnosis.
I collapsed out of the blue with a high temperature, went yellow, lost a lot of weight, and deteriorated rapidly. I was in a wheelchair within two years.
A few years ago, by chance, I met a doctor who studied thyroid medicine beyond the normal medical training. Due to receiving thyroid supplementation treatment, my health improved dramatically. I now have five times as much energy, am mentally much sharper, far less prone to infections, as well as many other improvements.
Unfortunately, it seems too late to affect my walking or the associated nerve damage, but I always hope there is more to be discovered.
I am determined that the knowledge of thyroid function in many common illnesses is made available so that others don't have to go through what I did.
Trends in medicine have swept away vital research of many fine doctors.
This work is very important to me and I hope others will benefit from it.
T: During my searches I stumbled to thyroidhistory.net and I was exited to have found this awesome library of medical research.
In Autumn 2005 we contacted Edna and asked her if there is something we could tribute to www.thyroidhistory.net to make it even more user friendly.
S: Like with all websites, there is always room for improvement and tweaking. It was a "no brainer" for me when Tiu asked me to help her and other thyroid patients by participating in this project. So we decided to put our professional skills to use - Tiu as a graphic designer and me as a programmer. We are now working as "behind the scenes webmasters " on thyroidresearch.com and making sure that the site is functioning as it should.
In 2001 Marks wife was coming to grips with being hypothyroid and struggling to get recognition let alone treatment from the NHS. During her search for answers she happened to strike up a relationship with Edna Kyrie through a hypothyroid web forum. At the time Mark was an unemployed web developer looking for something to do. When his wife asked if there was anything that could be done to improve the old thyroidhistory and make it easier for Edna to administer, Mark said yes, there was. A lot. It would also act as a portfolio entry for his job seeking activities and set to work straight away.
The immense task of transcribing the articles from the static text to the new database driven site by Mark, his wife and Elisabeth started a week later and was finished within a month.
Mark did find various contracts and jobs and in 2003 finally settled down with a permanent job … and a daughter!
In 1989, at age fifteen, I contracted glandular fever. Eventually I stopped testing positive for the virus but the symptoms persisted. I was diagnosed with M.E. and told there was little that could be done. I spent many years in bed unable concentrate, walk, or do much at all.
The usual blood tests were done, and came back ‘within the normal range'. I accepted this and made efforts to get on with my life. I was liberated by my electric wheelchair and became able to live independently. Over the years I studied with the Open University, did voluntary work, was a family support worker for a year and studied for a degree at Birmingham University.
In 2001 I was given information about thyroid problems and people with M.E., which I read with much scepticism, having become disillusioned with alternative medicine. I then found thyroidhistory.net which gave me all the scientific evidence I needed to question my diagnosis and explore ALL the evidence (family history, clinical symptoms and my medical history) rather than just blood tests in splendid isolation.
With the support of my GP and another doctor I am now on the road to recovery – building muscle, pain-free, increasing my energy and planning a future. Just two little thyroid tablets a day…
It's great to be able to join thyroidhistory.net as publicity officer helping it reach a wider audience and aid others with the wrong diagnoses.
Thanks to Edna Kyrie and others for bringing me to health again. Thanks to all those scientific researchers whose work we are trying to help escape from dusty libraries into the big wide world of the web.
